Xperia X10 Reaches EOL at AT&T, Might Not Taste Android 2.1 - Softpedia

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the first mobile phone the Japanese-Swedish vendor brought to the market with Google's Android operating system on board, reportedly reached the end of life status on AT&T's network in the United States.

The smartphone is still present on the wireless carrier's website on its own product page, but hitting the buy now link would get users only to a page where the refurbished Xperia X10 is available. The Xperia X10 is no longer in stock on the carrier's website, while the refurbished handset is available for only $0.01 upon the signing of a 2-year contract.

Nothing was officially announced on this for the time being, but it seems that things are not looking too bright for Xperia X10 owners out there, some of the latest reports suggest.

Since the device is EOL, there are only few chances that the wireless carrier would indeed release an OS update for it, just as previously promised, and that it would go past the Android 1.6 platform it currently runs under.

We're referring here to the Android 2.1 OS upgrade, which some suggest that might have been removed from AT&T's plans already.

Sony Ericsson made the software update available for its Xperia X10 users back in November, but AT&T still hasn't released it for the handsets available on its network.

Of course, Sony Ericsson USA did say at the time that it would take longer for the software to arrive on Xperia X10 smartphones in the United States, but things have been delayed so much that some might have even lost hope.

Unofficially, the handset already received the Android 2.2 update, and even a taste of the newer Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform version, but no official software landed until now.

AT&T did promise that the software update would be released for Xperia X10 handsets in its offering, and some users with initiative put up an online petition in an attempt to determine the wireless carrier to make the move.

Those of you who own a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on AT&T's airwaves and would like to sign the petition should head here for that.

Hopefully, the Android 2.1 OS upgrade will indeed be released for X10 owners in the near future, so stay tuned for additional info on the matter.
